How do I set up VLANs between datacenters?

Learn how to set up VLANs between datacenters for unified network connectivity.

PlanetNode offers VLANs between datacenters, allowing you to create a unified network across multiple datacenter locations.

Types of VLAN connectivity

PlanetNode offers VLAN connectivity in three scenarios:

  1. VLAN within the same rack (same ToR) - Included
  2. VLAN between racks in the same datacenter - Paid service
  3. VLAN between different datacenters (metro NL) - Paid service

Private Layer-2 VLAN connectivity is offered on a fixed monthly rate, unmetered, and designed for intra-datacenter and inter-datacenter workloads such as clustering, storage replication, and high-availability architectures.

VLAN within the same rack

VLAN connectivity within the same rack (same Top-of-Rack switch) is included as part of your colocation infrastructure. The VLAN will be added to your uplink port, not as a dedicated link.

This is included as part of your base infrastructure - no additional charges apply.

Included Service

VLAN connectivity within the same rack is included to avoid unnecessary friction and is expected by professional colocation customers. The VLAN is configured on your existing uplink port.

VLAN between racks (same datacenter)

VLAN connectivity between two racks in the same datacenter is available as a paid service.

Positioning: Private L2 fabric / intra-DC connectivity

SpeedMRCNRC
1 Gbit/s€35€150
10 Gbit/s€75€175
40 Gbit/s€150€300

Included:

  • Dedicated VLAN / L2 segment
  • No data limits (unmetered)
  • Provisioning within datacenter
  • Suitable for storage, high availability, and cluster traffic

VLAN between datacenters

VLAN connectivity between two different datacenters (metro Netherlands) is available as a business-grade service.

Positioning: Business-grade inter-DC L2

SpeedMRCNRC
1 Gbit/s€300€150
10 Gbit/s€600€175
40 Gbit/s€1,200€300

Included:

  • Redundancy by default (via EVPN-VXLAN overlay)
  • Dedicated VLAN / L2 segment
  • No data limits (unmetered)
  • Suitable for disaster recovery, geo-redundancy, and database replication

Optional add-ons:

  • SLA (latency / MTTR): Contractual
  • EVPN/VPLS hand-off: Available on request

Business-Grade Service

Inter-datacenter VLANs are designed for disaster recovery, geo-redundancy, and database replication scenarios. All VLANs run on our EVPN-VXLAN overlay infrastructure, providing redundancy by default. Pricing is fixed monthly rate, unmetered, and designed to be well below MPLS pricing while providing reliable business-grade connectivity.

Available locations

Inter-datacenter VLANs are available between our datacenter locations:

How to request VLAN connectivity

To set up VLAN connectivity:

  1. Contact support: Create a support ticket
  2. Specify requirements: Include:
    • Type of VLAN connectivity (same rack, same datacenter, or between datacenters)
    • Which racks or datacenters you want to connect
    • VLAN ID and configuration requirements
    • Speed requirements (1, 10, or 40 Gbit/s)
    • Any special networking needs (redundancy, SLA, etc.)
  3. Review configuration: Our team will review your requirements and provide a configuration plan with pricing
  4. Implementation: We'll set up the VLAN connection according to your requirements

Technical requirements

When requesting VLAN connectivity, please provide:

  • Connection type: Same rack, same datacenter, or between datacenters
  • Source location: Which rack or datacenter the VLAN starts from
  • Destination location: Which rack or datacenter the VLAN should connect to
  • VLAN ID: The VLAN ID you want to use
  • Speed: Required speed (1, 10, or 40 Gbit/s)
  • Equipment: Details about your equipment at each location
  • Optional requirements: Redundancy, SLA needs, EVPN/VPLS hand-off

Configuration

Our team will work with you to configure the VLANs according to your network requirements. Technical details and pricing will be discussed during the setup process.

Use cases

VLAN connectivity is useful for:

  • Same rack: Connecting multiple servers within your rack
  • Same datacenter: Storage replication, clustering, high availability between racks
  • Between datacenters: Multi-datacenter deployments, disaster recovery, geo-redundancy, database replication

Pricing summary

  • Same rack: Included (no additional cost)
  • Same datacenter: From €35/month (1 Gbit/s) to €150/month (40 Gbit/s)
  • Between datacenters: From €300/month (1 Gbit/s) to €1,200/month (40 Gbit/s)

All VLAN connectivity is offered on a fixed monthly rate (MRC), unmetered (no data limits), with a one-time setup fee (NRC).

Setup fees (NRC):

  • Same datacenter: €150 (1 Gbit/s), €175 (10 Gbit/s), €300 (40 Gbit/s)
  • Between datacenters: €150 (1 Gbit/s), €175 (10 Gbit/s), €300 (40 Gbit/s)

Pricing

All pricing is excluding VAT. Pricing is designed to be competitive and transparent. Same-rack connectivity is included to avoid unnecessary friction, while paid services cover patching, ToR ports, and administration costs.
